What Is a Gastroscopy?
A gastroscopy is a detailed examination of the upper digestive tract. Our physicians gently guide an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube fitted with a camera, through your mouth to closely examine the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine.
This procedure helps us investigate a range of digestive concerns, including ulcers, inflammation, cancers and difficulty swallowing. Our physicians will collect small tissue samples (biopsies) to help make an accurate diagnosis, including testing for H. pylori where appropriate.

Preparing for Your Gastroscopy
Before your appointment, please follow the eating, drinking, and medication instructions provided by our team. Let us know about any allergies, medications, or health conditions, and call the clinic if anything in your instructions is unclear. We’re happy to help.
Our medical team will monitor you closely throughout the procedure and during recovery. If you receive sedation, please arrange for a responsible adult to take you home and be sure to follow your discharge instructions. You may notice a temporary sore throat or some bloating afterward. As with any medical procedure, there are risks, including bleeding, perforation, and sedation-related complications, which your physician will discuss with you beforehand. These risks are uncommon, and the procedure is considered safe and routine.
